PewDiePie responds to “haters” over $7 million YouTube earnings

With a subscriber count of over 37 million, PewDiePie's channel is by far the most popular on YouTube. That popularity—which is nearly double that of the next biggest channel HolaSoyGerman, and way above even huge musical artists like Rihanna and One Direction—has proved to be rather lucrative for the man behind the camera, Felix Kjellberg.

According to Expressen, a newspaper from Kjellberg's home country of Sweden (translated by the BBC), the YouTube star earned around £4.5 million ($7 million) in 2014 for his gaming commentary videos.

While Kjellberg's subscriber count means that the equivalent of half the entire the UK population is watching his videos, his success has caused something of an uproar across social media, and his virtual home on YouTube. Users are questioning why he earns so much money, and if he truly deserves it. In an effort to calm the raging masses, Kjellberg took to YouTube with a video called "Let's talk money" (embedded below), in which he talks about his surprise at the Internet's reaction to his financial success.
