EA’s new Mirror’s Edge Catalyst and Star Wars Battlefront gameplay impresses at Gamescom

COLOGNE, Germany—EA's Gamescom 2015 press conference was short on surprises, but it did give us a fresh glimpse at one of its most anticipated titles: Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

Little was said about the stark first-person parkour platformer outside of the usual PR guff, with EA instead (thankfully) letting the game do the talking. The brief but impressive gameplay demo, which you can view below, showed Faith infiltrating a skyscraper with her usual acrobatics before being stopped in her tracks by a mysterious assailant. There was brutal free-running combat (complete with chest-thumping sound effects), plenty of wall climbing, and a whole lot of smashed glass. Suffice to say, it's looking very good indeed.

The other star of the show was another DICE special in the form of Star Wars Battlefront. The big news was the reveal of Fighter Squadron, a new aerial vehicle-only multiplayer mode for the game that lets you jump into the cockpit of X-Wings and TIE Fighters and engage in some super-speedy dogfighting. For fans of the original Lucasarts TIE Fighter and X-Wing games, this should be a fantastic inclusion, even if combat appears to be limited to the surface of the planet, rather than taking place in the vast emptiness of space. A-Wings, TIE Interceptors, the Millennium Falcon, and Boba Fett's iconic Slave I ship are also said to be playable.
