To get an Apple Watch on or anywhere near the advertised April 24 availability date, you needed to place your order within minutes of its 3am pre-order launch on April 10. Orders placed today won't ship until May or June. If you're an app developer hoping to capture the interest of early adopters, this is especially inconvenient.
Today Apple sent out an email offering recourse to those developers: register now, and you'll be entered for a chance to buy an Apple Watch Sport with a blue Sport Band that will be delivered to your door on April 28. Apple is using a WWDC-like lottery system to determine who will actually get these watches—if you don't win the lottery, you'll have to (figuratively) wait in line with the regular people who placed their orders in the online Apple Store.
Some Apple Watch developers have already spoken to Ars about the difficulties of making an app without actual watch hardware—though Apple has distributed watches early to certain developers, that has not been the norm. These developers have had to work with the Apple Watch simulator included in Xcode, which has limitations compared to regular hardware.
