Lock up your wallet: Steam’s “Monster Summer Sale” is live

Just when you had finally saved up enough for that dream vacation, Steam's Monster Summer Sale has come along once again to tempt your wallet with extreme discounts on tons of downloadable PC games. This year's sale starts off with some enticing daily deals on the Metro and XCOM franchises, the Homeworld Remastered Collection, and many more. There are some great Flash sales going on right now, too, including the wonderful Fez for a ridiculously low $2. New deals will be posted regularly every day until the sale is done on June 20.

As if those discounts weren't enough to get your wallet crying, Valve has also put a sheen of gamification on the entire event with a set of "Monster Summer Game" quests. Collecting trading cards earned from sale games gives you a chance to craft a "Summer Sale Badge." With that equipped, you can fight monsters in the Summer mini-game, which can unlock special game discounts that apply to all of Steam and give you a higher level to show off on your virtual badge.

Be warned, though, that not all sale prices are what they seem to be. As the Steam subreddit has been pointing out, some publishers have been jacking up prices just before the sale, to make the current, "standard" prices look like discounts. Grand Theft Auto V may be one of the worst offenders here, raising the "regular" asking price to $84.97 to make the usual $59.89 price look like a 30 percent discount (though they are at least throwing in in-game "Cash Cards" and packages with other Rockstar games to sweeten the deal).
