The family of a Staten Island man whose filmed, chokehold arrest last summer went viral settled a civil rights lawsuit Monday against the New York Police Department for $5.9 million.
Eric Garner died July 17 after he was put in a chokehold during an arrest that was captured by a bystander's mobile phone. The video shows Garner—who suffered from diabetes, sleep apnea, and asthma—yelling: "I can't breathe! I can't breathe! I can't breathe! I can't breathe!"
