Four months after Warner Bros. took the seriously broken PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight down from Steam, the game officially went back on sale last night at a slightly reduced price of $50—and with some downloadable freebies by way of apology. The re-release also comes with a new patch meant to make the game more playable, but early indications suggest that many of the same problems are still afflicting the troubled port.
Some of those problems are apparent just from the patch notes. Warner Bros. still acknowledges "a hard drive paging issue with some GPUs on Windows 7" that requires players to periodically restart the game to fix. That's a pretty major issue for a big-budget game that's technically been out for months now. WB says it's also still working with GPU makers to "address stability issues on certain cards related to the latest drivers."
But the most galling bit may apply to Windows 10 users, who Warner Bros. says should have "at least 12GB of system RAM on a PC [to allow] the game to operate without paging and provide a smoother gameplay experience." That's an unprecedented requirement for a PC game; even a graphically demanding title like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt only recommends 8GB of RAM at the high end, and it can get by with 6GB. It's also a surprising admission considering that the game runs fine on an Xbox One with much less RAM (and an essentially similar operating system and DirectX drivers).
