The BMW i8, Tesla Model S, and other mighty morphing concept cars

We're big fans of concept cars here at Ars. For the uninitiated, concept cars are those automotive flights of fancy that car companies design and build for the big auto shows. Sometimes they're completely wild and outrageous, more often they're used as a way to get people used to a forthcoming production car or new design language. Free from the constraints of having to meet roadworthiness regulations, these ideas often have to be watered down a little if and when they make it into production.

To see that evolution play out, the nice people at Petrol Supply Co shared this set of morphing gifs with us. Each depicts the transformation of a concept into their production versions. The gallery above includes a number of our favorite cars, including the BMW i3, the BMW i8 (a contender for our best car of the year), the Tesla Model S (another possible contender), Nissan's GT-R, Jaguar's F-Type, Honda's forthcoming hybrid NSX, and Lexus' mighty LFA.

Feel free to use the comment thread to share your favorite concept-to-production cars.
