Now that YouTube has officially spread its gaming livestreaming wings, Twitch has been long overdue for an expansion of its own offerings—something to carve out territory beyond game-specific content. We finally got such an announcement on Thursday with the launch of Twitch Creative, a new category and landing page dedicated to the "determined community of artists, crafters, and builders" who already livestream their artistic efforts on the site.
As a way to attract viewers to the new site, Twitch announced the launch of a Joy of Painting marathon kicking off at 5pm EST on Thursday. The marathon has the blessing of the company that represents the puffy-haired, happy-tree-loving host Bob Ross, who passed away 20 years ago. The marathon will include the entirety of the show's run—meaning 403 episodes, which Twitch says will take over eight days to air to completion. A new Bob Ross "emote" has launched as well, which the site has dubbed KappaRoss.
The category's landing page launched with an apparent Adobe-sponsored push full of Photoshop-related experiments, and the full page includes such efforts as 2D drawing, coding, 3D modeling, photo retouching, cosplay costume creation, and fingernail art. The site has long hosted game-in-development streams along with game coders' efforts to let fans see how the sausage gets made, but this new, broader "Creative" distinction may draw more works-in-progress streaming from across the artistic spectrum.
